General Mills Inc. (GIS) expects more advertising and new products to help get two of its U.S. cereal and yogurt businesses growing over the next year after declining in fiscal 2013.
General Mills on Wednesday reported a 13% increase in fourth-quarter earnings, helped by the acquisition of new international businesses. The period capped a fiscal year where newly acquired businesses and growth overseas offset weak results closed to home, where the company's U.S. retail division, which makes up nearly 60% of overall sales, eked out just 1% sales growth.
Cereal, with sales down 2%, and yogurt, down 5%, were a drag on the U.S. business for the year, results that concerned investors since those two areas have historically provided consistent profit growth.
General Mills executives said the problems with cereal were self-made due to a lack of standout new products and good marketing over the past year, something the company will try to remedy over the next year. "We feel like we didn't have the gun quite fully loaded," General Mills Chairman and Chief Executive Ken Powell said in an interview Wednesday.
Cheerios, the company's largest cereal brand, is already seeing some benefit from new advertising that has hit the airwaves in recent weeks, including an television commercial featuring a bi-racial family that generated plenty of Internet buzz. Mr. Powell stopped short of saying that the debate stirred by the ad has boosted sales. "It's still early days, but we are seeing steady improvement in [Cheerios] over the last few weeks," he said.
